National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)

Mission Statement

The NIDA Mission is to advance science on drug use and addiction and to apply that knowledge to improve individual and public health.

Interest Areas

General Topics

  • Characterize properties of emerging drugs/drug combinations and their targets in the brain and periphery
  • Develop new approaches to identify emerging drugs; improve the timeliness of data on drug use, substance use disorder (SUD), overdose and other outcomes; understand drivers of overdose mortality trends
  • Examine factors influencing risk/resilience for substance use and SUD and translate this knowledge into prevention interventions
  • Understand mechanisms of SUD, recovery, and relapse to identify new targets for intervention
  • Identify trajectories from drug use to SUD to inform personalized interventions
  • Advance research on neuroplasticity towards interventions for SUD and its consequences
  • Advance research on neurobiological overlap between pain and SUD to inform interventions
  • Develop strategies to minimize opioid use disorder (OUD) risk in the context of pain treatment and improve care for people with OUD and chronic pain
  • Advance solutions to disparities in SUD risk, outcomes, and access to care among hard-to-reach and rural populations
  • Develop SUD and overdose prevention, treatment, and recovery interventions, and strategies to integrate care across SUD settings
  • Advance patient-centered endpoints for clinical trials, including reduction in craving and other SUD symptoms
  • Use data science and AI to develop clinical decision support tools and identify gaps in healthcare services for SUD and overdose
  • Advance polysubstance use research and treatment for concurrent SUDs
  • Develop new approaches to reduce overdose risk
  • Evaluate recovery support services and models for delivering these services
  • Advance research on co-occurring SUD and mental health disorders, including on co-treatment models
  • Advance research on SUD and HIV, including on how drug use affects HIV transmission/progression and related interventions
  • Advance the training of a multidisciplinary new generation of scientists
