Mission Statement
The FIC Mission is to support and facilitate global health research conducted by U.S. and international investigators, build partnerships between health research institutions in the U.S. and abroad, and train the next generation of scientists to address global health needs.
Interest Areas
General Topics
FIC grant programs aim to build research capacity through individuals, institution and networks to meet future and evolving global health challenges addressed by NIH research in low- and middle-income countries. Specifically, FIC grant programs:
- Advance research on prevention and control of the dual burden of communicable and noncommunicable diseases and disabilities
- Support research and research training in laboratory, clinical, behavioral and population sciences.
- Stimulate innovation in the development and implementation of technologies to address global health problems.
- Support research and research training in implementation science.
Assistance Listing
Assistance listings are detailed public descriptions of federal programs used across government agencies that provide grants, loans, scholarships, insurance, and other types of assistance awards. They are maintained in the System for Award Management (SAM) and can be used to search for opportunities in Grants.gov.

FIC Policy Considerations
All NIH ICOs follow a set of NIH-wide policies. These ICO-specific considerations build on those policies.
Additional Information by Funding Category
Administrative Supplements
Recipients applying for administrative supplements should submit their requests no later than June 30.

Conferences and Meetings
The Fogarty International Center does not fund investigator-initiated conference and meeting awards.
Individual Career Development
The Fogarty International Center does not fund investigator-initiated individual career development awards.
Funding Criteria for FIC Research Training and Career Development Awards
FIC grant programs conduct research and research training in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), as defined in the NIH Glossary. Since 2012, research training (D43, D71, U2R, G11) and foreign career development (K43) awards have been further restricted to exclude most upper-middle income countries (UMICs) that are also country members of the G20.
FIC does not support research training and foreign career development applications from G20 UMICs and will not fund applications that propose the training of scientists from these countries. The 2026 list of UMICs that are also members of the G20 include Argentina, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa, and Turkey. G20 UMICs can partner in FIC research training programs where the goal is to train scientists from eligible LMICs and to build research capacity at the LMIC institutions. For Notices of Funding Opportunities published after December 5th, 2026, there will be no exception to this funding policy for G20 UMICs in Sub-Saharan Africa such as South Africa.
Individual Fellowship
The Fogarty International Center does not fund investigator-initiated individual fellowship awards.
Institutional Career Development and Other Training
The Fogarty International Center does not fund investigator-initiated institutional career development awards.
