If you meet the general eligibility criteria, you may apply during the annual application period, which begins on the first business day of January.  The deadline typically falls in mid-March for the AIDS, Clinical, and General subcategories, and in mid-April for ACGME.

Application Instruction Guide

Registration

Before starting an application, prospective applicants must obtain an eRA Commons account.  An eRA Commons account is required to access the Application Submission System & Interface for Submission Tracking (ASSIST), a system that is used to prepare and submit applications electronically to NIH and other Public Health Service agencies.

If you have an eRA Commons ID, you may start your LRP application by logging into ASSIST. 

Note
NIH requires users to change their passwords every 90 days. You can confirm that your Commons password is current by visiting https://www.era.nih.gov.

Type of Award

The LRPs have two broad types of awards: First awards, called New Awards, and subsequent awards, called Renewal Awards.

Definition: New Award
If a prospective applicant has never received an LRP award, apply for a New Award.
Definition: Renewal
If a prospective applicant has received at least one prior LRP award, apply for a Renewal Award.
