Withdraw Your Application

Scope Note

A signing official (SO) can reject an application in eRA Commons within the first two business days (the viewing window) after the application is submitted.  After that two-day window, an SO must submit a request to the Center for Scientific Review's Division of Receipt and Referral (DRR) to have the application withdrawn using the Prior Approval module in eRA Commons (preferred) or via email.

Withdrawing an application via the eRA Commons’ Prior Approval module

This action can be initiated by a principal investigator or SO but can only be submitted by the SO. The request can be internally routed in eRA Commons between the SO and PI for review before submission.

Tip
See the ‘Submit a Withdrawal Request’ topic in the eRA Commons online help for screenshots and step-by-step instructions. Once approved, the SO will be able to see that the application status has changed on the Status Information screen in eRA Commons.

If an SO or PI are unable to withdraw the application via eRA Commons, a back-up option to withdraw the application is available via email. The SO or PI must write a brief letter requesting the application be withdrawn.

  1. Include in the letter:
    • Name of the principal investigator or project director (use the contact PD/PI for a multi-PI application)
    • Application number
    • Title of the application
    • Funding opportunity announcement number
  2. Have it signed by an authorized organization representative
  3. Email it to the Division of Receipt and Referral, Center for Scientific Review at csrdrr@mail.nih.gov
