January 2, 2019

Implementation of the Final Rule on Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects (Common Rule). NIH will transition from “E” to “X” codes to reflect categories of exempt research.   See NOT-OD-19-050.

September 14, 2018

Updates to Review Criteria for Fellowship Applications. NIH will update review language for fellowship applications.  See NOT-OD-18-227.
Updates to Review Criteria for Research Grant Applications.  NIH will update review language for research projects. See NOT-OD-18-228.
Updates to Review Criteria for Career Development Award Applications.  NIH will update review language for most career development award applications submitted for due dates on or after January 25, 2019.  See NOT-OD-18-229.

December 19, 2017

NIH Policy on the Inclusion of Individuals Across the Lifespan as Research Participants.  NIH review groups will assess each application /proposal as “acceptable” or “unacceptable” with regard to the age-appropriate inclusion or exclusion of individuals in the research project. See NOT-OD-18-116.

Additional Review Criteria for Career Development Award Applications Involving Clinical Trials. NIH will apply additional review criteria for career development award applications involving clinical trials.  See NOT-OD-18-109.

Additional Review Criteria for NRSA Individual Fellowship Applications.  NIH will apply additional review criteria for NRSA individual fellowships proposing to gain research experience in an ongoing clinical trial led by a sponsor or co-sponsor. See NOT-OD-17-122.
Additional Review Criteria for NRSA Institutional Fellowship Applications.  NIH will apply additional review criteria for NRSA institutional fellowships proposing to gain research experience in an ongoing clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor.  See NOT-OD-17-123.

Updated Appendix Policy Eliminates Clinical Trial-Related Materials for Applications Submitted to Due Dates on or After Jan. 25, 2018. Since clinical trial-related materials will be required in the new PHS Human Subjects and Clinical Trials Information Form, they will no longer be allowed in the Appendix for due dates on or after January 25, 2018, unless specifically required in the funding opportunity announcement.
