Parent Announcements (For Unsolicited or Investigator-Initiated Applications)

Parent announcements are broad funding opportunities that applicants can use to submit investigator-initiated applications for a range of popular programs. These announcements do not specify any particular area of scientific interest. They simply provide the standard forms and instructions needed to apply. Parent announcements are open for up to three years and are typically reissued to ensure continuity. They use standard due dates with three application, review, and award cycles each year.

Not all NIH institutes and centers participate on all parent announcements. Before submitting your application, make sure the institute or center that may be interested in your research is listed as a participating organization in the funding opportunity.

General Information

• Grant applications and associated documents (e.g., reference letters) are due by 5:00 p.m. local time of the applicant organization on the specified due date.
• Direct opportunity-specific questions to the agency contacts listed within the opportunity.
• Research project (R01), exploratory/developmental (R21) and planning grant (R34) applications with a PD/PI appointed to an NIH Peer Review advisory group may be eligible for an alternate submission schedule. See Continuous Submission for details and review assignment cutoff dates.
