Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Grants - Phase II (R42)
To help small businesses that partner with a nonprofit research institution bring scientific innovations to the marketplace. The STTR supports research and development (R&D) awards to eligible United States small business concerns only.
Purpose
The following programs fall under the R42 activity code:
- Phase II: Phase II recipients continue the research and development (R&D) efforts initiated in Phase I.
- Fast-Track: The NIH STTR Fast-Track allows both Phase I and Phase II of a project to be submitted and reviewed together as one application to reduce or eliminate the funding gap between phases.
- Direct to Phase II: Small businesses with demonstrated feasibility and technical merit but have not received a Phase I SBIR or STTR for that project, can apply for a Direct to Phase II.
Organization Eligibility
Only United States small business concerns are eligible to submit applications to SBIR and STTR funding opportunities. Collaborating research institutions (e.g., universities) are subcontractors to the small businesses and may not apply as applicants. See SEED: Eligibility Criteria.
Project Director/ Principal Investigator (PD/PI) Eligibility
PD/PI must be employed by either the partnering research institution or small business.
