In addition to the health and safety of people and animals in programs the NIH supports, there is also a deep concern about the health of the biomedical enterprise in the affected area when disaster hits. The NIH is committed to working with researchers and institutions to ensure that NIH-funded research continues.
The NIH Extramural Response to Natural Disasters has a list of available resources in response to Hurricane/Tropical Storm Harvey including guidance on animal welfare issues. Investigators whose research depends on animal resources should coordinate closely with respective Institutional Officials and IACUCs to ensure recovery efforts proceed in a humane and scientifically appropriate manner.
