Research and Development

NIH supports a wide variety of research and development programs, including capacity building, conferences and meetings, research projects (small, large, exploratory, pilots), and resource programs.

NIH awards these extramural research grants to institutions, hospitals, and other research organizations, including small businesses, to support circumscribed research led by investigators, to create developmental opportunities, and to provide research-related and shared resources.

Programs

Capacity Building

Support for research workforce development, infrastructure improvements, and improvements to research, training, and administrative capability at biomedical and behavioral organizations.
Conferences and Meetings

Support for high-quality conferences and meetings relevant to the public health and to the scientific mission of the participating institutes and centers.

Research Projects

These programs provide funds for salaries, equipment, supplies, travel, and other allowable direct and indirect costs to the sponsoring institution or organization.
Resources

Funds for health organizations to develop and support research centers, facilities, connectivity, and shared resources. For example, resource programs support sharing of animal models, biological materials, instruments, and connectivity.
