NIAAA Data Repository Requirements

Expectations for Grant Applications Involving Human Subjects Research:

For grants involving human subject data, NIAAA expects the data to be submitted to the NIAAA Data Archive (NIAAADA). The NIAAADA is a large data repository that archives and shares human subjects data generated by NIAAA-funded research. NIAAA-funded investigators conducting applicable human subjects research are expected to submit de-identified, individual-level data to this repository. Investigators who are not funded by NIAAA but have alcohol-related human subjects data are welcome to deposit their data to the NIAAADA. The data in the NIAAADA are curated, catalogued, and made available to the general research community at the time of an associated publication or end of the award/support period, whichever comes first.  

• The NIAAADA Website: NIAAADA is a part of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Data Archive (NDA), a data repository for human subject research. The NIAAADA website serves as the portal for information on NIAAA-related data submission and data access.  It provides guidance and resources for investigators on NIAAA-funded projects who are preparing to share data through NIAAADA, as well as for prospective applicants seeking information about NIAAA's data sharing expectations.   Investigators preparing to share data can use this site to learn about the initial steps and prerequisites before and immediately after award, data harmonization guidelines and common data definitions, and general guidance for common questions or issues. Data submitted to NIAAADA will be accessible by the general research community via NIAAADA.
