NICHD Data Repository Requirements

NICHD researchers should use the NICHD Data and Specimen Hub (DASH) for sharing human clinical and population health data and National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) repositories, such as the database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP), the Sequence Read Archive (SRA), and the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), for sharing genetic data. For other data types, NICHD researchers can search the Data Repository Finder to find data repositories where they can share data as they develop and implement their Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plans.

Generalist repositories may only be used for sharing open access data. Controlled access repositories must adhere to additional standards, where appropriate, such as those described in Requirements for NIH Controlled-Access Data Repositories and Users and requirements described in Request for Information on Draft NIH Controlled-Access Data Policy and Proposed Revisions to NIH Genomic Data Sharing Policy and Required Security and Operational Standards for NIH Controlled-Access Data Repositories. 

Other repositories may be acceptable if they accept NICHD data and meet these NICHD and related NIH data sharing and repository requirements.

Researchers should only propose the use of established repositories in the DMS Plan, and should not propose to build a new data repository or to share data through a forthcoming data repository.
