NIAID Data Repository Requirements

Scientific data generated through NIAID-funded and -conducted research must be responsibly shared using appropriate repositories, metadata standards, and controlled-access mechanisms in alignment with FAIR Principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) to support data discovery, access, interoperability, and reuse. NIAID encourages data sharing in accordance with the following expectations:

• NIAID strongly encourages data to be shared via established repositories with desirable characteristics, not solely through publications or supplemental material. When possible, data should be made available via domain- or data type-specific repositories, such as ImmPort, Sequence Read Archive (SRA), and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). If an appropriate domain-specific repository is not available, data should be shared via an established generalist repository considering access controls as needed. The NIAID Repository Matcher may be used to find appropriate repositories for data sharing.
• NIAID expects researchers to share de-identified human research participant-level data from NIAID-funded or -conducted clinical trials through controlled access platforms, including but not limited to accessclinicaldata@NIAID, TBPortals, and dbGaP. Registration of studies on ClinicalTrials.gov is not sufficient to meet NIAID data sharing expectations. Additionally, all clinical trials data necessary to replicate research findings regardless of whether the data are used to support scientific papers are expected to be shared, including data for primary, secondary, and other endpoints.
• Specific NIAID programs, funding opportunities, or cooperative agreements may include specific data management and sharing expectations, or repository requirements. Investigators should review applicable funding opportunities and award terms and conditions for additional data sharing expectations.
• When possible, NIAID encourages data to be shared in repositories that are indexed in the NIAID Data Ecosystem Discovery Portal using community standards such as those described in the NIAID Blueprint to maximize data discovery and reuse.
