Data Submission and Repositories 

NHLBI encourages data submission into BioData Catalyst (BDC), particularly for funding opportunities encouraging BDC deposition, and projects subject to the NIH Genomic Data Sharing (GDS) Policy. For data submitted elsewhere, a globally-unique, persistent identifier with sufficient metadata should be shared with NHLBI to support Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable (FAIR) principles and populate a master index for data generated from all NHLBI-supported research.

Depositing data in multiple repositories is discouraged due to version control and storage cost concerns.

Ancillary Studies collect or derive new data separate from the parent study to extend its scientific scope. Regardless of funding source, studies approved as ancillary to an NHLBI-funded parent must follow the parent study's data sharing policies, consistent with the NIH DMS Policy. The ancillary study contact principal investigator (PI) must notify the parent steering committee in writing of any circumstances limiting data sharing. Ancillary data must be submitted to an NHLBI-approved repository on the same timeline as parent data, and PIs need advance steering committee approval before sharing data with other NIH repositories.
