Clinical Trials Interest Areas
NHGRI supports clinical trials within its mission to accelerate scientific and medical breakthroughs that improve human health through cutting-edge genomics research, new technology development, and the study of genomics’ impact on society. Priority areas are described on the NHGRI Profile page.
Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to contact NHGRI program staff at least six weeks before the intended submission date.
NHGRI has a particular interest in:
- Accelerating research in genome biology, disease genomics, genomic medicine, the ethical, legal, social implications (ELSI) of genomics research, or computational biology and data science in ways that extend beyond a single disease or organ system
- Clinical trials that are relevant to multiple diseases, are disease-agnostic, or generalizable across variants, tissues, cell types, or genomic functions
- Implementing genomic medicine into clinical care, or developing and testing strategies that address the ethical, legal, and social implications of genomic medicine in real-world settings
- Applying hybrid implementation-effectiveness designs that evaluate clinical utility and implementation outcomes in genomic medicine or ELSI contexts
- Evaluating prevention or treatment strategies guided by genomic information, particularly when findings are expected to be applicable across multiple conditions or populations
NHGRI generally does NOT support:
- Applications focused on a single disease or organ system. Such applications should be directed to the relevant NIH Institute or Center (IC). Applicants who are uncertain about the appropriate IC are encouraged to contact NHGRI before submission
- Applications whose primary scientific objective is to understand a single biological or behavioral process, the pathophysiology of a disease, or the mechanism of action of an intervention
