FY27 NIH Extramural Loan Repayment Program: Now Accepting Applications

We are pleased to announce that the fiscal year (FY) 2027 NIH Extramural Loan Repayment Program (LRP) application cycle opened on September 1, 2026, and closes on November 19, 2026. Researchers interested in applying are encouraged to join the LRP Technical Assistance Webinar that takes a deep dive into the application process, and more. 

Here are the basics on the extramural LRP:

• Established over two decades ago to recruit and retain highly qualified biomedical and behavioral researchers in the research workforce
• Offers up to $100,000 in qualified educational debt repayment in exchange for a two-year commitment to conduct research
• Must be a qualified researcher engaged in NIH-mission relevant research for a minimum of 20 hours per week at a nonprofit or government institution to be eligible  

As we shared in late July, the extramural LRP was consolidated into three subcategories to make it easier to identify which pathway fits your research and apply with greater clarity and confidence. Mission-relevant research areas include:

• Clinical Research (L30)
• Pediatric Research (L40)
• FOCUS (L70) (NEW) 

Applicants interested in the newest subcategory are encouraged to review the FOCUS research areas of each NIH Institute and Center before applying.

LRP Awards and Funding, FY21-25

For the FY26 cycle, NIH reviewed 1,730 applications and funded 1,434 awards totaling $99,669,311, for a success rate of 82.9%. More information on LRP data is available on the NIH Data Book. 

The LRP offers a powerful benefit to postdocs and early career researchers:  

• Financial relief when it matters most: LRP awards provide significant relief from the burden of student loan debt, easing a common source of stress for researchers weighing whether to stay in research or pursue higher-paying alternatives.
• Freedom to follow scientific passion: LRP eases the financial pressure of loan repayment, allowing early career researchers to make choices based on scientific interest and impact rather than being driven primarily by compensation concerns. 

Beyond this immediate relief, the LRP application process also builds valuable experience for pursuing future NIH funding opportunities. The resulting momentum and confidence can pay dividends throughout an awardee’s research career.
