NCI-Specific Information:

NHLBI Specific Information:

NHLBI has a 6 year limit of cumulative support on institutional and mentored Ks (e.g., K12 or KL2 plus the K08).
Eligibility: Candidates must have a health professional doctoral degree, such as the M.D., D.O., D.V.M., or equivalent degree, and a professional license to practice in the United States.  Documentation of active licensure should be included in the application.
Advisory Committee: NHLBI strongly encourages K08 candidates to include an Advisory Committee composed of the candidate's mentor(s) and two or three other senior faculty members.  If the candidate does not propose an Advisory Committee, she/he should document which individuals are available to cover all areas of expertise that are required for the research plan and career development.
Concurrent Competing Applications: K08 applicants may not hold any other Federal or non-Federal equivalent salary award, such as the American Heart Association Scientist Development Grant.

NHGRI Specific Information:

Based on a training workshop in April 2013 with subsequent follow up with NHGRI's Council, NHGRI has re-defined the goals for its research and training and career development programs. Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to contact Program Directors to discuss their concept for this initiative during the development stages of the application.
 

Awardees and their mentors are strongly encouraged to attend at least one annual NHGRI trainee networking meeting while supported on the K08. Travel for the awardee and mentor may be requested.
 

Salary Support: Up to the current legislative cap, plus fringe benefits, per year, commensurate with the applicant institution's salary structure for persons of equivalent qualifications, experience, and rank.

Research Support: Up to $40,000 per year

In addition to Research Support, awardees and their mentors are strongly encouraged to attend at least one NHGRI Research Training and Career Development Annual Meeting while supported on the K08.  Travel for the awardee and mentor may be requested up to $1500 each per NHGRI meeting.

NIDCD Specific Information:

NIDCD uses the K08 program to support individuals with a clinical/health-professional doctorate interested in supervised career development experiences in basic clinical research (not in patient-oriented research) that lead to research independence in biomedical, behavioral, or translational fields.

  • Application must demonstrate its contribution to NIDCD and its fit to NIDCD's Mission, Research Priorities, and Strategic Plan.
  • Applicants are strongly encouraged to provide clear evidence that adequate resources are available at the institution for the successful completion of the proposed research project.
  • Applications should include explicit statements from the institution and the mentor(s) addressing the following:
    • Detailed information about who will provide the necessary resources;
    • Funding source and amount of additional funding (as needed);
    • Support staff available and committed to the project;
    • Availability of biostatistical support for the duration of the study - including the planning period; and

NIDCR Specific Information:

NIDCR sponsors the K08 Career Development Award to ensure training of highly qualified dentists or other clinicians in oral health research relevant to the NIDCR Strategic Plan. The prospective candidate must have a DDS, DMD, MD or other clinical doctoral degree. The award may be used by dentists who wish to pursue a graduate research training program that results in the Ph.D. degree. Health professionals with a doctoral degree may use the award for postdoctoral research training. The intent of this program is to support the development of independent research careers of clinician-scientists. The NIDCR will not provide support for clinical specialty training under this program.

Individuals who have been appointed to a tenure-track faculty position supported by a NIH P30 program are not eligible to apply for a mentored NIDCR Career Development Award.

Research projects proposed in response to this announcement will be expected to have a defined impact on the environmental health sciences and be directly responsive to the mission of the NIEHS, which is distinguished from that of other Institutes by its focus on research programs seeking to link the effects of environmental exposures to the cause, mechanisms, moderation, or prevention of a human disease or disorder or relevant pathophysiologic process. Examples of environmentally relevant exposures include industrial chemicals or manufacturing byproducts, metals, pesticides, herbicides, air pollutants and other inhaled toxicants, particulates or fibers, fungal, bacterial, or biologically derived toxins. Agents considered non-responsive to this announcement include, but are not limited to: alcohol, chemotherapeutic agents, radiation which is not the result of an ambient environmental exposure, drugs of abuse,  smoking , except when the exposure is the result of second-hand exposure in the context of the indoor environment (particularly in children) and infectious or parasitic agents. Ecologic, biomonitoring, biotransformation or biodegradation studies are also not responsive except when these are incidental to an epidemiologic study. NIGMS Specific Information:

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) will accept applications for the K08 in the areas of anesthesiology, clinical pharmacology, sepsis, innate immunity and inflammation, trauma and burn injury, and wound healing research. NIGMS offers the K08 award to support the development of academic physicians (or individuals with comparable clinical training) into independent scientists.   • Eligibility for the K08 is limited to individuals with no more than 6 years of postdoctoral experience at the time of application (either the initial or resubmission application). The NIMH will generally limit support to no more than 4 years. The requested duration of support should be appropriately justified, taking into consideration prior research experience and the proposed mentored career development goals that are essential for developing an independent, NIMH-funded research program.   • An application must include a strong and credible plan for the candidate's transition to research independence, including milestones, and evidence of significant institutional commitment to the continued development of the K08 candidate as an independent researcher at the applicant institution. This program is intended to support applicants with a clinical doctoral degree, who are licensed to practice clinically, who are within 3 years of completing their clinical training (which is defined as sequential years of residency training and clinical fellowships). Applicants who are beyond 3 years post clinical training must obtain prior written approval from Director of Training and Career Development to be eligible for this program. Candidates for the K08 (other than neurosurgeons) must devote a minimum of 75% full time professional effort to research and career development activities associated with the K award. The letter of institutional commitment should include a description of the candidate's non-research responsibilities according to the following: 1/2 day = 10% of the 5 day workweek, 1 month = 8% of the year, time on call for clinical duty is not protected time for research.

Neurosurgeons must devote a minimum of 50% full time professional effort to research and career development activities associated with the K award. The letter of institutional commitment should describe, as above, the specific allocation of time (on a weekly and/or monthly basis) devoted to K award activities and clinical and other non-K award activities.

  • Applications proposing the use of natural products or devices in an interventional research project should explicitly describe the status of the Investigational New Drug (IND) or Investigational Device Exemption (IDE).   • Applicants are strongly encouraged to provide clear evidence that adequate resources are available at the institution for the successful completion of the proposed research project.
