Purpose of the Award
- Named in honor of the late National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) Director, Stephen I. Katz, M.D., Ph.D.
- Supports an innovative project in an area of science that represents a change in research direction for the Principal Investigator and for which no preliminary data exist
- Principal Investigator must be an early stage investigator (ESI)
Details
- Must propose a new research direction for the ESI(s)
- An incremental advancement/expansion/extension of previous research effort not appropriate
- Appropriate level of departure from previous efforts will be field-dependent
- Merit and feasibility based on conceptual framework, level of innovation, and potential to significantly advance our knowledge and understanding
- Peer review
- Reviewed in standing study sections in the NIH Center for Scientific Review
- Clustered for discussion during the meeting with other Katz R01 awards
- Percentiled with and against other R01 applications
- No specific dollar limit
- Advance permission required for $500,000 or more (direct costs) in any year
- May request up to five years of funding
- Utilized by nearly all NIH Institutes and Centers
