NEI supports short-term research training for students in health professional schools.

The mission of the National Eye Institute (NEI) is to eliminate vision loss and improve quality of life through vision research. Applications considered for funding by the NEI must fall within the areas of emphasis detailed in the NEI Strategic Plan. (NEI Strategic Plan: Vision for the Future (PDF 22.5 MB).

• Application Submission Dates: May 25 (AIDS date September 7).
• NEI will not accept applications requesting $500,000 or more in direct costs in any year.
• Renewals – successful renewal applications should demonstrate that the former trainees pursued subsequent research training and research funding and/or stayed engaged in vision related biomedical research as co-investigators, consultants, and/or collaborators either in academia, clinic, and/or industry.

NHLBI Specific Information:

NHLBI will only accept applications in scientific areas relevant to the NHLBI mission. For areas of specific interest, please see the NHLBI website, http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/about/org/mission.htm.  

NHLBI supports short-term research training experiences for students in health professional schools (nurses, dental students, PharmD students, physical therapy students, and medical students during the summer. Institutions may request support for at least 4 but not more than 32 students per budget period to pursue research training for 2-3 months on a full-time basis during the summer. Current T32 Program Directors who submit T35 applications should indicate how the proposed T35 activities differ from the activities supported by their T32 award.

NIAAA Specific Information:
NIAAA supports short-term research training for students who are active in alcohol research in order to promote the application of new biomedical, behavioral and statistical technologies that advance alcohol research.

NIBIB Specific Information:
NIBIB uses the T35 mechanism to provide intensive clinical or translational research experiences for pre-doctoral bioengineering students or short-term training in focused, emerging scientific areas relevant to NIBIB’s scientific mission.  NIBIB discourages current T32 awardees from submitting T35 applications; if applicants choose to apply, they must clearly indicate how the proposed T35 activities differ from the activities supported by their T32 award.

NIDCD Specific Information:

NIDCD utilizes this award mechanism to establish a network of short-term training programs at institutions conducting Federally-funded research on hearing to provide students in professional doctoral programs in audiology leading to the Au.D. degree with hands-on exposure to  clinical research or translational research in the hearing sciences. This traineeship shall involve the conduct of a small-scale research project suitable for presentation at a scientific meeting. The short-term research experiences provided by this award mechanism are not intended for students enrolled in integrated or sequential Au.D./Ph.D. programs. This initiative seeks to encourage Au.D. students to develop research career trajectories through pursuing sustained programs of research training and career development in order to advance the state-of-the art in hearing health care services.

• NIDCD expects T35 trainees to submit applications for subsequent research training and research funding either to NIH or any other funding entity. After completing their Au.D. degree T35 trainees interested in pursuing a biomedical research Ph.D. degree are strongly encourage to apply to the NIDCD Research Dissertation Fellowship for Au.D. NIDDK Specific Information:
NIDDK supports short-term research training for medical students, typically between the first and second years of medical school.  At least half of the students must be engaged in projects that are directly relevant to NIDDK areas of research interest, as determined by program staff.  Our research areas include diabetes, endocrinology, metabolic diseases, obesity, nutrition, digestive and liver diseases, and kidney, urologic, and hematologic disorders.  NIDDK will accept applications requesting support for at least 8, but no more than 32, students per year.

NIEHS Specific Information:
NIEHS supports short-term research training for individuals in health professional schools. NCCIH Specific Information:
Because of NCCIH's unique mission (https://www.nccih.nih.gov/about), the Center supports this program at institutions with research-intensive environments; institutions focused in complementary health practice; as well as other eligible applicant organizations that have the research expertise, curriculum, infrastructure, and faculty for complementary and integrative health-related research training.
NCCIH is committed to improve the capacity of the field to carry out rigorous research while increasing the number, quality, and diversity of complementary health researchers. Thus, the Center uses this program to support short-term complementary and integrative health-related research training for predoctoral students interested in careers in biomedical, behavioral or clinical research as well as health professional students (medical students, dental students, and/or students in other health-professional programs) during the summer.
