Participating NIH-Funded Clinical Trial Networks

Scope Note

Some broad opportunities allow applicants to leverage existing NIH-funded clinical trial networks to propose additional trials or ancillary studies. The following networks participate in the Clinical Trials and Ancillary Studies Conducted within NIH-Funded Clinical Trial Research Networks (UG3/UH3 - Clinical Trial Required) opportunity.

NetworkDescriptionInstitute/Center
Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV Interventions (ATN)The ATN is devoted to the health and well-being of adolescents and young adults living with or at risk for HIV. ATN’s primary mission is to conduct both independent and collaborative research that explores promising behavioral, microbicidal, prophylactic, therapeutic, and other modalities in adolescents, ages 13 years through 24 years, living with or at risk for HIV.  Research studies focus on high-priority topic areas to address substantial and disproportionate gaps in health outcomes across the HIV prevention and care continuum.NICHD, NIDA, NIMH
Alzheimer’s Clinical Trial Consortium (ACTC)The ACTC provides an optimal infrastructure to accelerate the development of effective interventions for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). The ACTC invites applications that provide clinical testing (Phases Ib-III) of promising pharmacological and/or non-pharmacological interventions for cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms in individuals with AD or other aging-related dementias across the spectrum from pre-symptomatic to more severe stages of disease. ACTC infrastructure is not appropriate for single site clinical trials or routine Phase Ia first-in-human trials.NIA
Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN)The CPCCRN was established to investigate the efficacy of treatment and management strategies to care for critically ill and injured children, as well as to better understand the pathophysiological basis of critical illness and injury in childhood. CPCCRN includes 12 clinical sites and 12 sub-sites with more than 61,000 annual Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) admissions. NICHD expects the CPCCRN to be its primary and first-line infrastructure involved in implementing multisite pediatric critical care clinical research and trials.NICHD
Global Network for Women’s and Children’s Health Research (GN)The purpose of the Global Network is to improve health outcomes for women and children in low- and lower middle-income countries by researching sustainable, cost-effective health interventions, and strengthening research infrastructure and public health intervention capabilities in developing countries.  Proposed interventions may focus on the development, testing, adaptation, and implementation of cost-effective, integrated biomedical, behavioral, social, and public health interventions to reduce causes of premature morbidity and mortality among women of reproductive age and young children.NICHD
International Maternal, Pediatric, Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials (IMPAACT) NetworkThe IMPAACT Network is a cooperative group of institutions, investigators, and other collaborators focused on evaluating potential therapies for HIV acquisition and its related symptoms and comorbidities in infants, children, adolescents, and pregnant women, including clinical trials of HIV/AIDS interventions for and prevention of perinatal transmission.NIAID
Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units (MFMU) NetworkThe purpose of the MFMU is to improve obstetric care and outcomes for pregnant and lactating women and their babies by reducing maternal, fetal, and infant morbidity and maternal complications.  The MFMU Network conducts randomized clinical trials, observational and cohort studies, and registry activities on established pregnancy complications, such as preterm labor and delivery, as well as emerging issues, such as COVID-19 and Zika virus.NICHD
Neonatal Research Network (NRN)The purpose of the NRN is to improve healthcare and outcomes for newborns particularly extremely preterm and low birth rate (ELBW) and very low birth weight (VLBW) infants.  The NRN facilitates the advancement of neonatal care by establishing a network of academic centers that, by rigorous patient evaluation using common protocols, can study the required numbers of patients and can provide answers more rapidly than individual centers acting alone.  Studies may assess both short-term (clinical) and long-term maternal and infant/child outcomes and primarily include Phase 3 trials to address gaps in knowledge for the use of drugs and therapeutics during pregnancy and lactation.NICHD
Pediatric Trials Network (PTN)The PTN provides an infrastructure for conducting regulatory rigorous pediatric and lactation clinical trials that lead to updates in drug labels as directed by the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act (BPCA). The Network is designed to address the longstanding concern of a paucity of FDA labels for off-patent therapeutics commonly used “off-label” in children or during lactation. Investigators who are interested in collaborating with the PTN on areas such as regulatory requirements for Investigational New Drug (IND) studies, methods developments or pharmacokinetic analyses of drugs, and/or are interested in proposing projects that align with the BPCA Priority List are encouraged to propose projects assessing medications and conditions that are a part of the BPCA mandate to improve knowledge in pediatric therapeutics.NICHD
Pelvic Floor Disorders Network (PFDN)The purpose of the PFDN is to study clinical and health aspects of pelvic floor disorders in women including pelvic organ prolapse, urinary urgency/frequency, urinary incontinence, and fecal incontinence.  Relevant research areas include the development of novel and nonsurgical treatments to treat pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence, such as regenerative medical techniques, projects that optimize the effectiveness of existing treatments and minimize adverse events and studies focused on understanding the psychosocial consequences and alleviating the burden of living with pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, and fecal incontinence.NICHD
Strategies to Innovate EmeRgENcy Care Clinical Trials Network (SIREN)The SIREN Network performs clinical trials that impact the care of the patient with a non-stroke neurological and cardiovascular emergency in the pre-hospital or emergency department setting.  The goal of SIREN is to improve the outcomes by identifying effective treatments given in the earliest stages of care.NINDS, NHLBI
NIH StrokeNetThe NIH StrokeNet is designed to implement clinical trials and research studies to advance acute stroke treatment, stroke prevention, and recovery and rehabilitation following a stroke across the lifespan. NIH StrokeNet conducts multi-center exploratory and confirmatory stroke clinical trials focused on promising interventions, including pragmatic trials performed in large numbers of patients with minimal alteration from clinical practice and low per-patient costs. Additionally, the Network supports ancillary studies designed to add scientific aims to active studies being conducted within StrokeNet.NINDS
