What's the Difference Between "Frozen" and "Current" Data in RePORT?

When you use the NIH RePORT tool Awards by Location and Organization, resulting data may be listed as either “current” or “frozen” depending on the time of year. This is because NIH updates current data for the ongoing fiscal year until September 30. Current data may change as new projects are funded or as funding levels and other information is updated for existing projects.  

Shortly after September 30, NIH will freeze data from the previous fiscal year and conduct a thorough review meant to ensure the data’s accuracy and quality. NIH will not update data for the recent fiscal year until final frozen data are available, generally a few months after the end of the fiscal year or around the start of the new calendar year.  

Users can continue to access data from the previous fiscal year before frozen data are published. However, they may notice slight variations between data obtained after the end of the fiscal year and the published frozen data released a few months later, due to refinements made during the freezing process. 

Awards by Location and Organization is useful for finding information on the NIH awards made to institutions in a specific area. In addition to location (awards made to institutions in a particular state or congressional district, for example), you can also search by Institute/Center, organization type, or funding mechanism. You can also download a summary of domestic award data for the most recent fiscal year.
