Description:

Whether you are aiming for an academic career, exploring options beyond the bench, or are simply unsure of your next step, career planning can be stressful. In this session, NIH Training and Diversity Program Officers will lead a conversation about how to approach planning your career, helpful resources, and ways you can prepare now for a fulfilling career in the future.


This event took place during the 2023 NIH Virtual Grants Conference

Objective:

Upon completion of this session, participants will:

• gain knowledge about career-planning resources;

• learn how NIH can be a resource; and

• learn principles for figuring out the next career steps.

Teraya Donaldson
<p>Teraya Donaldson, M.S., Ph.D., serves as the research training policy officer in the Division of Biomedical Research Workforce (DBRW) in the Office of Extramural Research (OER).</p><p>Dr. Donaldson earned her doctorate from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Microbiology investigating malarial chemotherapeutic targets. After completing a post doctorate in biophysics at Oberlin College and serving as visiting faculty fellow at University of Richmond, Dr. Donaldson led graduate and KL2 training initiatives as the Assistant Director of Education for the Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Research (CCTR) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). In that capacity, she was faculty for the Center and administrative liaison for students, faculty, scholars, and other participants in educational programs in CCTR. Additionally, Dr. Donaldson was the graduate director for the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) R25 award where she provided mentoring and guidance for predoctoral students. As an AAAS S&amp;T fellow in Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) from 2018-2020, she developed training and workforce initiatives including the NIH Prize for Enhancing Faculty Gender Diversity. Previously Dr. Donaldson was a health science policy analyst in the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) and a Health Scientist Administrator in ORWH.</p>

Kenneth Gibbs
<p>Kenneth D. Gibbs, Jr., Ph.D. oversees the Undergraduate and Predoctoral Cross-Disciplinary Training programs at the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). In this position, he manages the Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC) program, grants on the Science of Science Policy in the biomedical research enterprise (SCISIPBIO), and scientific conference grants (R13). He also manages research grants in the areas of stem cell biology for the Division of Genetics and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology.</p><p>Gibbs previously directed the NIGMS Postdoctoral Research Associate Training (PRAT) program and before that, he was a program analyst in the Institute’s former Office of Program Planning, Analysis, and Evaluation. Prior to joining NIGMS, he completed postdoctoral training as a cancer prevention fellow at the National Cancer Institute and was an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the National Science Foundation. Gibbs earned a B.S. in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, an M.P.H. from Johns Hopkins University, and a Ph.D. in immunology from the Stanford University School of Medicine.</p>

Lauren Ullrich
<p>Dr. Lauren Ullrich received her PhD and MS in Neuroscience from Georgetown University, researching memory in early Alzheimer's disease for her thesis and also published on teaching, pedagogy, and professional development in science. She received her B.A. from Swarthmore College in psychobiology. Prior to coming to NINDS as a AAAS Science &amp; Technology Fellow, Lauren worked for the Society for Neuroscience in a range of policy and programmatic areas, including government and public affairs; scientific rigor and reproducibility; workforce and training; and animals in research. At NINDS, she helps coordinate NINDS’s diversity activities, which span the pipeline from neuroscience education outreach (grades K-12) to funding opportunities and mentoring networks across critical career transition points.</p>
