If you answered “yes” to either question, then don’t miss this popular presentation from NIH experts that provides insights and helpful hints on preparing an application for submission. Learn how to avoid the most common mistakes in writing grant applications and correct some typical misconceptions about the grant review process. This event took place during the 2023 NIH Virtual Grants Conference

Objective: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to: • list significant steps involved from application to award; • explain the fundamentals of writing a clear and concise research grant application; and • locate resources to facilitate the grant-writing process.

Anita Bechtholt
<p>Dr. Bechtholt earned her Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience at Oregon Health &amp; Science University in 2004. Her thesis work examined the role opioid receptors in the conditioned rewarding and aversive properties of ethanol and was supported by an individual predoctoral NRSA from the NIAAA. Dr. Bechtholt’s postdoctoral training in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania focused on understanding how antidepressants are effective, when they are effective, using a variety of behavioral, neurochemical, pharmacological, and genetic methods. This work was supported by a Young Investigator Award from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression.</p>

<p>As Communications Director for the NIH Office of Extramural Research, Ms. Megan Columbus is responsible for leading strategic planning and communication activities pertinent to the management of NIH’s extramural program. She enjoys connecting scientists and administrators to information and tools in support of their research programs, helping the broader public learn how NIH-supported research contributes to health advances, and supporting the ongoing dialog between NIH and the research community. Ms. Columbus’ office is responsible for the NIH Grants and Funding website, the NIH Guide to Grants and Contracts, the Extramural Nexus newsletter and “Open Mike” blog, eRA system communications, extramural staff training, media and legislative relations, and a host of other resources. She especially enjoys her outreach responsibilities that involve more personal engagement with the NIH extramural research community, such as live webinars and the NIH Virtual Conferences.</p>
