Description:

In this virtual event, participants will learn about two NIH R15 programs designed to expose students to research and strengthen the research environment of institutions that have not been major recipients of NIH support. In addition, participants will gain insights into the application process with an opportunity to participate in a live Q&A with a panel of NIH experts.

<p>Charles Ansong, Ph.D., is a program director in the Division of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biological Chemistry at the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), National Institutes of Health (NIH). He administers grants in the research areas of bioenergetics, trace metal transport and homeostasis, and redox reactions and oxidative stress. Dr. Ansong is a scientific/research contact for the NIGMS Academic Research Enhancement Awards (AREA) R15 program. Before joining NIGMS, he served as Staff Scientist and Team Lead for Biostructure and Function at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington. Dr. Ansong earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Rochester, New York.</p>

<p>Carmen Bertoni, Ph.D., is a Scientific Review Officer (SRO) in the Musculoskeletal, Skin, and Oral Sciences (MSOS) branch of the Division of Translational and Clinical Sciences (DTCS) at the National institute of Health (NIH). She is responsible for managing some of the study sections run at MSOS, including Academic Research Enhancement Awards (AREA) R15 Scientific Review Group Meetings and to ensure that all grant applications and contract proposals under review receive a timely and expert review. Before joining NIH, she held a faculty position at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and served as a consultant for pharmaceutical companies and non-profit organizations.</p>

Anne Gershenson
<p>Anne Gershenson, Ph.D., is a program director in the Division of Biophysics, Biomedical Technology, and Computational Biosciences at the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), National Institutes of Health (NIH). She oversees research projects and small business innovation research grants in the application of molecular modeling methods to specific biological problems. Dr. Gershenson received degrees in physics from Bryn Mawr College (A.B.) and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (Ph.D.). Before joining NIH, she was a faculty member at the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she used biophysical methods to study protein folding and protein-membrane interactions amongst other systems. Dr. Gershenson is an NIGMS scientific/research contact for the R15 program.</p><p> </p>

<p>Jeanette Marketon, Ph.D., is the Receipt and Referral Officer for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). She is the scientific/research contact for the NIDA R15 programs. Dr. Marketon earned a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Sheffield, UK; did postdoctoral research at the University of Stockholm and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, and at the National Institute of Mental Health; and was an Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University. Her research focused on glucocorticoid receptors. Before joining NIDA, she was a Referral Officer for the National Cancer Institute, and prior to that worked in grants administration supporting the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program, the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas and the Medical Research Council (UK).</p><p> </p>

Mahua Mukhopadhyay
<p>Mahua Mukhopadhyay, Ph.D., is a program director in the Developmental Biology and Congenital Anomalies Branch at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). She oversees the early embryonic development, biophysics/biomechanics of development, regenerative biology, stem cell biology and developmental metabolomics portfolios of the branch. Dr. Mukhopadhyay is the scientific and administrative contact for the NICHD R15 program. Before joining her current position, she served as a senior research scientist at the NIH Intramural where she led several research projects pertaining to typical and atypical mammalian embryonic development. Dr. Mukhopadhyay earned her doctorate degree in biology from the McMaster University, Canada.</p><p> </p>

<p>Liz Perruccio, MS, Ph.D., serves as a program director in the Division of Extramural Science Programs at the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) and oversees research and training grants within NINR’s priority areas of Health Equity, Social Determinants of Health, Population and Community Health, Prevention and Health Promotion, and Systems and Models of Care. She is the scientific and administrative contact for the NINR R15 program. Previously, she served as a Scientific Review Officer at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, and as a Program Director at the National Cancer Institute’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities where she oversaw national programs that advanced cancer control/prevention research to reduce health disparities. Dr. Perruccio holds an MS in Basic Medical Sciences and a Ph.D. in Cell Biology from New York Medical College.</p><p> </p>
