PURPOSE

The purpose of this notice is to alert the scientific community that 
effective with the October 1, 2003 receipt date, the National Institute 
of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) will use the NIH 
EXPLORATORY/DEVELOPMENTAL RESEARCH GRANT AWARD (R21) at 
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-03-107.html and the NIH 
SMALL RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM (R03) at 
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-03-108.html.  

NIDCR's two Program Announcements, PA-01-087, Exploratory/Developmental 
(R21) Research Grants, and PAR-01-053, Small Grant Program for the 
NIDCR, will be considered inactive as of October 1, 2003.   NIDCR will 
accept R03 applications for the August 3, 2003 receipt date.  Under the 
old guidelines, as well as the new guidelines, eligibility for R03 
awards will be restricted to new investigators.  

NIDCR will continue to use the R03 and R21 mechanisms to meet specific 
program needs as announced in individual Requests for Applications 
(RFA) or Program Announcements (PAs).   Investigators responding to one 
of these RFAs or PAs should follow the guidance provided in the 
announcement.
