  • Applications should be submitted no later than June 30th. In general, Fogarty supplement applications will be reviewed, and awards made by the end of September.
  • PIs who hold more peer-reviewed multi-year research awards (including non-NIH research awards from other research funding organizations) beyond the parent award are not eligible to apply.
  • Supplements to parent awards that include multiple PDs/PIs MPIs may be submitted by the grantee institution of the parent award on behalf of the PD/PI who meets the eligibility criteria. This is further described in this NOSI.
  • Projects in no-cost extension are not eligible.
  • Only one supplement application may be submitted to this NOSI for each Qualifying Critical Life Event.
  • The Qualifying Critical Life Event must be current or have occurred within the year prior to the supplement application submission. Applicants should include dates of the life event in the application.
  • Applicants are encouraged to describe how the life event is curtailing or expected to curtail their research progress and career development and provide justification of how supplement support will help them to maintain productivity and successfully complete the research project. Any additional forms of support including carryover funds and institutional matching funds should be described.
  • Applications should include a letter signed by the Institutional Business Official certifying PI’s eligibility for the supplement award and a description of institutional support.
  • Supplement requests must be within the scope of the parent grant.  Supplements are intended to address costs or circumstances caused by the critical life event and may not be used to expand the originally proposed research project.
  • Supplement funds may not be used for PI salary support during the regular or extended period of the grant.
  • Awards with significant unspent funds (25% or more of direct costs) in the parent award are not eligible to apply.
  • FIC resources for this program are limited and may not cover all applications.  Applications will be prioritized based on the impact of the critical life event on the funded project and the potential for the supplement to allow for successful completion of the originally proposed aims.
  • Please see FIC supplement guidance at https://www.fic.nih.gov/Grants/Pages/administrative-supplements.aspx
  • Applicants are strongly encouraged to 1) consult with the Program Officer of the parent award AND the FIC Scientific Program Contact associated with this NOSI prior developing an application and 2) inform them immediately after submitting the application.
  • The FIC maximum allowable direct cost is $50,000.

NHGRI Specific Information:

NHGRI supports resources, approaches, and technologies that accelerate genomic research focused on the structure and biology of genomes; the genomics of disease; the implementation and effectiveness of genomic medicine; computational genomics and data science; the impact of genomic technology, advances, and implementation on health disparities and health equity; and ethical, legal, and social issues related to genomic advances. NHGRI recognizes the importance of diversity in the genomic workforce, without which the promise of genomics cannot be fully achieved.

In general, NHGRI supports studies that provide generalizable methods and knowledge. Approaches that are comprehensive across the genome or are generalizable across variants, tissues, diseases, or function may be in scope for NHGRI to the extent they address priority areas described in the NHGRI 2020 Strategic Vision and on the web pages for the research mission of NHGRI’s Extramural Divisions and Offices:

Applications for studies relevant only to a particular disease or organ system should be directed to the appropriate Institute or Center. Applications whose primary scientific objective is to understand a single biological or behavioral process, the pathophysiology of a disease, or the mechanism of action of an intervention, will not be in scope for NHGRI.

Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to consult the NHGRI Guidelines for Grantees Requesting Administrative Supplements and contact Program Directors in advance of submitting the supplement request.
