- NICHD resources for this program are limited and may not cover all applications.
Applications will be prioritized based on the impact of the critical life event on the funded
project and the potential for the supplement to allow for successful completion of the
originally proposed aims. Support from the institution will also be considered.
- Supplement funds may not be used for PI salary support during the regular or extended period of
the grant.
- Qualifying Critical Life Events: The PD/PI must demonstrate a critical life event during the
parent grant project period, such as childbirth, adoption, serious personal health issues or
illness and/or debilitating conditions, high-risk pregnancy, or primary caregiving
responsibilities of an ailing spouse, child, partner, parent, or member of the immediate family.
- Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the Scientific Program Contact prior
to submission to discuss the proposed supplement as well as other options for addressing the
impact of the critical life event.

NIDDK Specific Information:
NIDDK welcomes requests for support from all NIDDK funded K awardees who have experienced a
life-qualifying event during the project period of their award. For NIDDK:
- NIDDK accepts supplement applications on a continuous basis with reviews occurring three times a
year: January 15th, May 15th, and October 15th.
- Requests cannot be made for K awards that are in or will be in a no-cost extension for any part
of the supplemental award period.
- Requests can be made for life-qualifying events that have taken or will take place at any time
during the project period as long as sufficient justification is provided that the event slowed
or is likely to slow progress. All requests must describe how the supplement will
accelerate a successful transition to independence.
- Eligible applicants include all funded K awardees, including those who have successfully
competed for an R03 under PAR-DK-19-365.
- Applicants who have successfully competed for an R01 are encouraged to submit a supplement under
a companion FOA, NOT-OD-20-055.

submitted 25 or more months after the date of the critical life events will not be considered for
funding.
NIMH will require that supplement budget requests cannot exceed $50,000/year direct costs.
