Important Clarification for Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15) Application Submissions

Notice Number: NOT-OD-06-019

Key Dates
Release Date: December 12, 2005

Issued by
National Institutes of Health (NIH), (http://www.nih.gov/)

This notice clarifies the submission dates for PA-06-042 (Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15)) released on October 25, 2005 and PA-06-064 (Basic and Preclinical Research on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) (R15)) released on November 9, 2005. These program announcements apply to all R15 applications beginning with the submission date of February 25, 2006 and thereafter. They do not apply to the January 2, 2006 submission date for R15 AIDS applications. The announcements have been modified to reflect an opening date of January 17, 2006, the first date that AREA applications may be submitted to Grants.gov.

Note that all R15 AIDS applications submitted for the January 2, 2006 submission date should still use the paper PHS 398 application process and instructions found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/phs398.html. The original announcements, PA-03-053 (Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15)) released on January 9, 2003 and PA-05-141 (Basic and Preclinical Research on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) (R15)) released on July 15, 2005, will apply for the January 2, 2006 submission date. Finally, since January 2, 2006 is a holiday, the AIDS application submission date (for all AIDS applications, not just R15s) is the next business day January 3, 2005.

Institutions applying for AREA awards for the February 25 submission dates and beyond are reminded of the requirement to register with both Grants.gov and the eRA Commons early. Registration can take 2-4 weeks. See http://era.nih.gov/ElectronicReceipt/preparing.htm.
