Second Addendum to PAR-08-112 and PAR-08-113 - Brain Disorders in the Developing World: Research Across the Lifespan (R01 and R21, respectively)

Purpose

In addition to the topics listed in Notice NOT-MH-10-001, the NIMH will also support HIV/AIDS-related mental health research in response to PAR-08-112 and PAR-08-113.

Research topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Epidemiology, natural history and pathogenesis of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) and neuropsychiatric disorders before and after treatment initiation in adult and pediatric populations
  • Impact of viral (clade diversity) and host genetic factors in HIV neuropathogenesis
  • Pathophysiology of HIV-associated CNS (central nervous system) disease resulting from opportunistic infections, co-infections and immune reconstitution syndrome
  • Neurobehavioral consequences, with respect to in-utero exposure to a dysregulated immune environment and/or antiretroviral medication, of being born to an HIV-positive mother
  • Development of common standardized assessment instruments with appropriate norms that can provide reliable and valid measurement of the neurobehavioral consequences of HIV and its treatments throughout the age-span in low and medium resource environments
  • Development of interventions to improve neurobehavioral functioning compromised by HIV/AIDS and its associated conditions that can be implemented in low and medium resource environments
