Purpose

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) intends to promote a new initiative by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for the continued funding of investigator-initiated, epidemiological cohort studies with relevance to the mission of NHLBI. Cohort studies with a planned examination goal of 2000 participants or more are encouraged to apply.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The FOA is expected to be published in Summer of 2017 with an expected application due date in Fall 2017.

This FOA will utilize the U01 activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

The intended FOA will encourage applications from ongoing, investigator-initiated epidemiological cohort studies. The FOA will provide funding to support the infrastructure needed to continue surveillance for outcomes, maintain biospecimens and databases, and conduct a minimal exam. Funds would not be provided for extensive phenotyping of cohort participants; instead, the purpose is to provide a platform to support innovative science through ancillary studies. These ancillary studies would be funded through other research project mechanisms, such as investigator-initiated R01 grants.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
