NOT-DK-20-054 - Temporary Extension of Eligibility for the NIDDK K01 Mentored Research Scientist Development Award During the COVID-19 Pandemic
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)
Under normal circumstances, individuals applying to the NIH Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) with a project within the mission interests of the NIDDK must have no more than 7 years of post-doctoral research experience. The purpose of this Notice is to inform the extramural community that due to ongoing disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the NIDDK will be extending the two-receipt cycle extension (roughly eight additional months) of eligibility for prospective applicants meeting the requirements for submission of a K01 application from the time period covered by the June/July 2021 due dates through the October/November 2021 due dates. Such individuals will be permitted to submit applications up to the February/March, 2022 and June/July, 2022 due dates, respectively.
Individuals who have previously received a two-receipt cycle extension as described in NOT-DK-20-054: Temporary Extension of Eligibility for the NIDDK K01 Mentored Research Scientist Development Award During the COVID-19 Pandemic are not eligible for an addtional extension. Additionally, multiple extensions for events occurring during the same time period (e.g. childbirth during the COVID pandemic) will not be permitted. Prospective K01 candidates may only receive an extension for one category for events that occurred within overlapping time periods.
Implementation
The two-receipt cycle extension in eligibility under this Notice applies only to applicants for a K01 award under one of the following Funding Opportunity Announcements: PA-20-176: Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (Parent K01 - Independent Clinical Trial Required), and PA-20-190: Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (Parent K01 - Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed).
For eligible applicants submitting new or resubmission applications, the two-receipt cycle extension will be automatically accepted by the NIH; no additional documentation is required.
To aid potential applicants in determining whether they are eligible for the extension, the following examples are provided:
Example 1: For individuals whose eligibility ended with the June/July 12, 2021 due dates, the temporary extension would allow them to apply for the K01 in October/November 2021 or February/March 2022.
Example 2: For individuals whose eligibility ended with October/November 12, 2021 due dates, the temporary extension would allow them to apply in February/March 2022 or June/July 2022.
Example 3: For individuals whose eligibility would normally end with February/March 12, 2021 due dates, the temporary extension permitted in NOT-DK-20-054 allowed them to apply in June/July 2021 or October/November 2021. They are not eligible for an additional 2 cycle extension to February/March 2022 or June/July 2022.
This policy may be subject to future updates.
