Purpose

This notice informs the community that data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive DevelopmentSM (ABCD) Study are being moved to a new data sharing ecosystem, the NIH Brain Development Cohorts (NBDC) Data Sharing Platform. Funded awards and applications for the ABCD study that are covered under the 2023 NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing (DMS) will require submission of an updated DMS Plan that reflects this change in the data repository for the ABCD Study data. The HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study is scheduled to be released in early 2025 through the NBDC Data Sharing Platform.

Background

The NBDC Data Sharing Platform is optimized for large datasets, including neuroimaging and genomics data and provides scalable data ingestion, integrated data analytics, and customized user experience. It also provides a homogenous solution for harmonizing with planned data from the HBCD Study scheduled to be released in early 2025. Beginning with the ABCD Study® 6.0 data release this fall, data will no longer be held at the NIMH Data Archive (NDA). This change means that ABCD data users will access data from the NBDC Data Sharing Platform, and data users will submit derived data to the NBDC Data Sharing Platform, rather than to NDA.

Policy Addendum

Per the NOT-OD-23-185, any changes to an approved DMS Plan require recipient to submit a timely formal prior approval request to the NIH Institute, Center, or Office (ICO) through the Prior Approval Module.  If the change requested is within 30 days of the submission of the Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR), the revised DMS Plan is allowed to be submitted as part of the RPPR package.

This notice is intended to inform researchers who currently have funded awards for the ABCD study covered under NOT-OD-21-013 “Final NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing” that NIDA's change in the ABCD study data repository must be reflected in a revised DMS Plan submitted as part of the next RPPR submission. If the funded award is in its last year, the  recipients are required to submit a revised DMS Plan through the Prior Approval Module within 120 days of the launch of the NBDC Data Sharing Platform or prior to the project end date, whichever comes first.

For new applications submitted on or after September 25, 2024, the DMS plan must indicate NBDC Data Sharing Platform as the repository for the ABCD and HBCD Study data, including but not limited to applications submitted under the following NOFOs:

  • Accelerating the Pace of Drug Abuse Research Using Existing Data (R21 Clinical Trial Optional). See NOFO RFA-DA-22-038.
  • Accelerating the Pace of Drug Abuse Research Using Existing Data (R01 Clinical Trial Optional). See NOFO RFA-DA-22-037
  • Accelerating the Pace of Child Health Research Using Existing Data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (R01-Clinical Trial Not Allowed). See NOFO PAR-22-137.
  • Accelerating the Pace of Child Health Research Using Existing Data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (R21-Clinical Trial Not Allowed). See NOFO PAR-22-138.

For all applications under review, regardless of the NOFO that applicants applied to, applicants must  anticipate revising the DMS Plan during the Just-In-Time process.
