INACTIVATION OF NIDA'S SMALL GRANT PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT (PA-02-170) AND 
NIDA'S EXPLORATORY/DEVELOPMENTAL GRANT PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT (PA-02-171)

PURPOSE

The purpose of this notice is to alert the scientific community that 
effective with the October 1, 2003 receipt date, the National Institute 
on Drug Abuse (NIDA) will use the NIH EXPLORATORY/DEVELOPMENTAL 
RESEARCH GRANT AWARD (R21) at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/
pa-files/PA-03-107.html and the NIH SMALL RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM (R03) at 
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-03-108.html.  

Therefore, applications submitted for NIDA funding of regular or 
unsolicited R03 and R21 grant awards must use the new Program 
Announcements listed above.  NIDA's two Program Announcements -- PA-02-171, 
Exploratory/Developmental Grant Applications (R21) for NIDA, and 
PA-02-170, NIDA Small Grants Program, will be considered inactive as of  
the October 1, 2003 receipt date submissions.  

This change does not affect special announcements such as the Cutting 
Edge Basic Research Award (CEBRA), the Behavioral Science Track Award 
for Rapid Transition (B/START) or Imaging - Science Track Award For 
Research Transition (I/START) Program Announcements (see 
http://www.drugabuse.gov/funding/resfundslist.html for details on these 
programs).
