Purpose

This Notice informs potential applicants that the National Center of Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) is participating in NOT-ES-22-006: Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Climate Change and Health.

The following text has been added to reflect the NCCIH's participation in this NOFO:

Components of Participating Organizations

Issued by

National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH)

Purpose

NCCIH

The mission of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) is to determine, through rigorous scientific investigation, the fundamental science, usefulness, and safety of complementary and integrative health approaches and their roles in improving health and health care (see NCCIH’s Strategic Plan). Examples of complementary and integrative health approaches include those with physical and/or psychological therapeutic inputs, often called mind and body interventions (e.g., yoga, tai chi, qi gong, meditation/mindfulness, hypnosis, music therapy, and art therapy), and approaches with dietary or nutritional therapeutic inputs (e.g., dietary supplements, plant-based products, and probiotics). Also of interest are multi-component interventions such as a combination of two or more complementary health approaches or integrated approaches to care in which a complementary health approach is used in combination with standard care. Applications will not be considered by NCCIH if they propose trials of regulated products (e.g., dietary supplements, devices, or biologics) for indications that have not been approved or cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. NCCIH will only support assignment of applications that include complementary and integrative health approaches.

The NCCIH does not support efficacy trials applications through the Parent R21 or R01. Instead, NCCIH has published a series of mind and body and natural product clinical trial-focused funding opportunities for investigators to use (see https://www.nccih.nih.gov/grants/nccih-clinical-trials-funding-opportunities). The NCCIH will support basic/mechanistic research through the Parent R21 or R01. The NCCIH also participates in most Parent Fellowship (F) and Career Development Awards (K) (see https://www.nccih.nih.gov/training/opportunities). Investigators are strongly encouraged to discuss their plans with NCCIH program staff prior to submitting their application.

Under this NOSI, NCCIH is interested in supporting research involving complementary and integrative health approaches in the following priority areas including, but are not limited to:

  • Development and evaluation of complementary and integrative health interventions to prevent, mitigate, or build resilience to the impacts of climate change on health and well-being in individuals and communities, particularly in populations most vulnerable to climate-related disasters
  • Research that seeks to understand how stress interacts with climate disasters to influence health and well-being, as well as the extent to which these factors are modified by complementary and integrative health interventions
  • Research to understand psychological, behavioral, biological factors and their interaction that strengthen individual and community-level resilience in the face of climate change-related stressors
  • Research on the use of complementary and integrative health approaches to foster environmental justice
  • Research involving the impact of planetary health on whole person health
  • Fundamental science research to assess the impact of climate change on biodiversity conservation of natural products and their potential therapeutic effects
