Purpose

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) intends to publish Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) to solicit applications from current awardees and new applicants to continue the previously funded “Collaborative Initiative on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders” (CIFASD). Responsive applications are expected 1) to address urgent and important unmet needs in the fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) field in the areas of diagnosis/case identification, intervention, basic and mechanistic studies, and prevention; 2) to use integrated and multidisciplinary research approaches and leverage multiple cohorts of individuals with FASD.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The FOA is expected to be published in Spring 2021 with an expected application due date in Summer 2021.

This FOA will utilize the UH2 Clinical Trial Optional activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise in FASD or relevant research areas to begin to consider applying for this new FOA. Projects will serve as the developmental/pilot project component of the CIFASD consortium. This component provides a mechanism for research ideas of a high-risk/high impact and the inclusion of new recruitment sites. UH2 awardees will be encouraged to establish mutually beneficial, collaborative relationships with other research projects (U01) and/or cores (U24) of the CIFASD consortium. Among the areas of FASD research encouraged in this initiative are those aimed to identify FASD cases early and accurately, improve interventions to mitigate FASD outcomes, enhance basic and mechanistic understanding of alcohol teratogenesis aimed at accelerated translation, and reduce prenatal alcohol exposure and the incidence of FASD.
