National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) intends to publish Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) to solicit applications from current awardees and new applicants to continue the previously funded “Collaborative Initiative on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders” (CIFASD). Responsive applications are expected 1) to address urgent and important unmet needs in the fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) field in the areas of diagnosis/case identification, intervention, basic and mechanistic studies, and prevention; 2) to use integrated and multidisciplinary research approaches and leverage multiple cohorts of individuals with FASD.
This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.
The FOA is expected to be published in Spring 2021 with an expected application due date in Summer 2021.
This FOA will utilize the U01 Clinical Trial Optional activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.
This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into the area of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) to begin to consider applying for this new FOA.
With this FOA, NIAAA seeks to fund a set of U01 applications with the goal of addressing urgent and high impact unmet needs in the FASD field in four areas: case identification/diagnosis, intervention, mechanistic understanding, and prevention. In the area of case identification/diagnosis, research of interest broadly includes improving early identification capability, accuracy and reliability of existing diagnosis schemes, and access to validated tools for diverse populations. Under the area of intervention, priorities include research to develop and validate intervention approaches targeting multiple domains and having long term benefit for diverse populations. In the area of mechanistic understanding, areas of research should address high impact questions and must have near-term potential for translation. In the area of prevention, research of interest includes proposals to design innovative approaches to reduce alcohol exposed pregnancies, including strategies to mitigate stigma associated with alcohol use during pregnancy and in women of childbearing age, and to develop intervention approaches based on a better understanding of nutritional, environmental, and socioeconomic risk and resilience factors.
NIAAA intends to commit a combined $4.6 million in total costs to fund this FOA and its companion FOAs.
