Purpose

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) intends to renew an initiative by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for Administrative Resources -Cooperative Agreements (U24) to provide administrative support to collaborative research projects (U01) and research resource cores (U24) as part of a Consortium on the Integrative Neuroscience Initiative on Alcoholism (INIA). The goal of INIA is to investigate brain mechanisms of excessive alcohol drinking and related phenotypes associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD).

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The FOA is expected to be published in Summer/Fall 2020 with an expected application due date in Winter/Spring 2021.

This FOA will utilize the U24 activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into this area of the neurobiology of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) to begin to consider applying for this new FOA.

With this Funding Opportunity Announcement FOA, NIAAA seeks to support 2 consortia to continue to advance integrative research efforts on mechanistic hypotheses pertaining to the development and remediation of excessive drinking associated with AUD. The focus should be on current research gaps which include neuroimmune functions and related mechanisms, stress systems, emotional and cognitive characteristics such as negative affect (e.g., hyperkatifeia, anxiety, emotional pain, dysphoria), and cognitive control dysfunction contributing to alcohol addiction. In addition, we encourage research addressing hypotheses addressing interactions between alcohol and other relevant causal influences on the development of AUD pathology which could include conditions such as trauma, pain conditions and social isolation. Both consortia supported under this initiative will be expected to collaborate with one another through joint meetings and resource sharing.

Each consortium should be organized around a central theme, with individual projects addressing a targeted subset of objectives. Projects should not only be relevant to the overall consortium theme, but also contribute data and analyses that are used by other consortium components to address hypotheses which integrate different levels of analysis or mechanistically related manifestations of AUD.

$10 million will be committed to the proposed FOA and companion FOAs. $5 million will be dedicated to each consortium. For the proposed FOA, a total of $1 million will be committed with $500 thousand dedicated to each of 2 consortia.
