NIH GUIDE FOR GRANTS AND CONTRACTS - FILES REORGANIZED AND OLDER FILES RENAMED

Release Date: May 17, 2000

NOTICE: OD-00-036

National Institutes of Health

This is to announce that, as part of an overall NIH Guide automation process,
the Office of Extramural Research has completed a reorganization of NIH Guide
files into one of three standard subdirectories (notice-files, pa-files and
rfa-files). All files/URLs will now follow a standard naming convention as
illustrated in the following examples:

     Notice Number: NOT-99-074
     URL: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT99-074.html

     Program Announcement (PA) Number: PA-99-002
     URL: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-99-002.html

Request for Application (RFA) Number: DK-99-009
     URL: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-DK-99-009.html

The new NIH Guide repository will be made available on or shortly after
Monday, June 12, 2000. This will mean that LINKS OR BOOKMARKS TO NIH GUIDE
FILES FOR NOTICES POSTED PRIOR TO FEBRUARY 6, 1998, AND FOR PAs AND RFAs
POSTED PRIOR TO OCTOBER 17, 1997, WILL BE BROKEN.

Repairing broken links can be accomplished in a variety of ways, including
the following:

o IF YOU KNOW THE NUMBER or TITLE - The new Notice Index, PA Index and RFA
Index will each have a comprehensive list of announcements issued
electronically since 1992, for their respective categories. Lists are sorted
by year and number and also include titles of announcements. Therefore, if
you know the announcement Number or Title, you can then use your Web
browser"s Find Command (Ctrl-F) to search within the three index listings and
find the new link. As an alternative, substituting the Number in one of the
example URLs above, based on the appropriate type (Notice, PA or RFA), should
bring up the new URL for a particular announcement.

o IF YOU KNOW THE OLD URL - If you need to repair a broken link and do not
know the Number or Title, the embedded date in the old URL will lead you to
the Weekly Index containing the original announcement with the new URL. The
following is an example of an old name and path for a Program Announcement:

      http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/1997/97.02.07/basic-research.html

In this example, look for the announcement in the 02/07/97 Weekly Index.
Weekly Indexes are sorted by calendar year, then week, and can be accessed
from the main NIH Guide page at:

     http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/index.html

o USING SEARCH ENGINE - Another alternative for repairing broken links is to
use the Search function provided on the main NIH Guide page (URL shown
directly above). From there, you can search for the Number, Title or any key
words or phrases contained in the announcement.

If there are any questions about these changes or for assistance in locating
the new URL of a specific announcement, please contact either of the
