National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)
The purpose of this notice is to inform potential applicants of a change to the maximum salary for clinician scientists for PAR-22-022 "NINDS Alzheimers Disease and Alzheimers Disease-Related Dementias (AD/ADRD) Advanced Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00 Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed)". Effective in FY 2022, NINDS will raise the maximum salary support provided to clinician-scientists on Career Development (K) awards. The new cap on salary provided for clinician-scientists supported by the K99 will be $125,000.00. Changes to the Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) are shown below.

Mentored Phase (K99) NINDS will provide up to $75,000 per year for salary support, plus fringe, and up to $20,000 for research support costs. For applicants with medical degrees who are licensed to practice, NINDS will provide up to $100,000 per year for salary support. Applicants must commit a minimum of 9 person months effort to the K99/R00 research during both phases of the award (Note: Neurosurgeons must commit a minimum of 6 person months effort to the K99/R00 research during both phases of the award). Further guidance on budgeting for career development salaries is provided in the SF424 (R&R) Application Guide. See also NOT-OD-17-094. Intramural: Mentored candidates in the NIH intramural program will be supported by intramural funds provided by the NIH Institute/Center intramural laboratory in which they are conducting their research. Budget details for the mentored phase will be negotiated with the sponsoring intramural laboratory. Salary will be consistent with that offered scientists in similar, intramural NIH positions. Extramural: Mentored candidates at an extramural sponsoring institution/organization will be supported by NIH extramural funds. The requested salary must be consistent both with the established salary structure at the institution and with salaries actually provided by the institution from its own funds to other staff members with equivalent qualifications, rank, and responsibilities in the department concerned. Further guidance on budgeting for career development salaries is provided in the SF424 (R&R) Application Guide. The total NIH contribution to salary may not exceed the legislatively mandated salary cap. See: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/policy/salcap_summary.htm. Independent Phase (R00) The total cost for the independent phase (R00) may not exceed $249,000 per year. This amount includes salary, fringe benefits, research costs, and applicable indirect costs.
