Purpose

This notice informs the public that, effective in Fiscal Year 2022 (FY2022), NINDS will raise the maximum salary support provided to clinician-scientists on Career Development (K) awards for the related funding opportunity announcements listed above. The new cap on salary provided for clinician-scientists:

supported by individual, mentored K awards (K01, K08, K22, K23, K99) will be $125,000;

supported by individual, independent K awards (K02) will be $150,000;

supported by institutional K awards (K12) will be $115,000.

Note 1. These values are caps on amounts provided from the K award. For example, a clinician supported by a K08 will be able to request up to $125,000 for salary in the K award budget for the effort committed to research on the K08 award.

Note 2. The maximum salary support provided for non-clinicians by NINDS K awards will remain unchanged.

Note 3. For continuing (type 5) applications, investigators may calculate their new salary allocation from their base salary at the start of FY22 (e.g., October 2021).

This change in maximum salary provided will become effective with the FY2022 start date of new (competing) awards, and with the FY2022 anniversary of the start date for non-competing awards. As always, requested salary must be consistent with both the effort committed to the award and the Principal Investigator’s base salary at the time of their K application.

K applications submitted for the October/November 2022 due date should utilize these new maximum salary levels for their budgeting.

Individuals whose K applications are awarded following review at October, 2022 or January, 2023 Council, should submit an email, through their business office, to NINDS_Submissions@ninds.nih.gov, if they wish to request an increase in salary allocation due to this change in policy.

For individuals with K awards who have yet to submit an annual Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR) with their FY2022 budget request, a budget that conforms to the new maximum salary allowance should be included in the RPPR.

Individuals who have already received a Notice of Award in FY2022, or who have already submitted an RPPR with a budget request for FY2022, may request a revised salary allocation via an email request through their business office. Email requests should be sent to NINDS_Submissions@ninds.nih.gov.

Program Directors/Principal Investigators of K12 awards may request, through their business office, an increase in budget to cover the increased cost of salary and fringe benefits provided to K12 scholars per this notice. For non-competing awards, this can be requested in the RPPR for the FY2022 budget if it has not yet been submitted or via an email to NINDS_Submissions@ninds.nih.gov if the RPPR containing the FY2022 budget request has already been submitted.
