Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to inform the scientific community of HIV-focused research priorities that are of interest to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).

NHLBI supports research on HIV-associated HLBS comorbidities, coinfections, and complications, including ancillary studies using established cohorts, such as the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS), the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS), and repository data and specimens. Priority topics of research include but are not limited to:

- HIV-related heart failure: pathophysiology, epidemiology, treatment and prevention

- HIV-related coronary artery disease: treatment and prevention

- HIV-related chronic lung disease: inflammation, smoking

- HIV-related infectious lung complications

- HIV-related sleep disorders

- Platelet dysfunction, endothelial activation and hypercoagulation during HIV infection

- Use of evidence-based therapies for HIV-related heart, lung, blood and sleep (HLBS) comorbidities

- Health disparities in treatment and outcomes

- Implementation barriers to treat and prevent HIV-related HLBS disease globally

NHLBI also supports research leading to an HIV cure, such as the use of gene-modified hematopoietic stem cell transplantation to cure HIV, mechanisms of HIV persistence and latency, or the impact of HIV infection on the hematologic system.

Research on prevention of HIV transmission through blood transfusion, such as implementation research to prevent such transmission in low-resource settings, remains an important part of NHLBI's mission.

NHLBI supports a range of cross-cutting implementation research as well as basic and health disparities research and training on the above-stated priorities.

HIV-focused applications (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-HL-17-486.html) could be submitted to NIH Parent FOAs that NHLBI participates in (e.g. PA-18-484 and PA-18-345) and will be reviewed by NIH Center for Scientific Research HIV study sections (https://public.csr.nih.gov/studysections/integratedreviewgroups/aarrirg/Pages/default.aspx).
