Purpose

The NHGRI intends to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for research projects to support work to expand the catalog of functional elements in the human genome, and secondarily in the mouse genome, as a continuation of the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements project (www.genome.gov/ENCODE). The solicitation will allow the submission of proposals to support continued studies in C. elegans and D. melanogaster as a follow-on to the modENCODE project (www.genome.gov/26524507), but this aspect will, going forward, comprise a smaller fraction of the effort to produce comprehensive catalogs of functional genomic elements. The FOA will solicit applications that apply high-throughput, cost-efficient approaches to expand the catalogs, which will be used by the research community to expand on basic biological knowledge and to interpret disease mapping studies. The funded projects will participate in a single Research Network and function as a highly collaborative consortium.

This notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The FOA is expected to be published in Autumn, 2011 with an expected receipt date in Autumn, 2011.

This FOA will utilize the U54 activity code. Details of the planned Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into this area of high-throughput functional genomics to begin to consider applying for this new FOA. Collaborative investigations combining expertise in high-throughput functional genomics, genomic data analysis, model organisms and bioinformatics will be encouraged and these investigators should also begin considering applying for this application.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
