Purpose

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) intends to reissue a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications for research to advance the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and amelioration of intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Centers (IDDRCs). Each IDDRC promotes highly collaborative, basic, translational, and clinical research in IDD.

It is the intent of the NICHD to support individual IDDRCs in the current P50 award format for a final cycle of competition in FY2026. The program in its current format will be redesigned to emphasize clinical trial readiness needs that will move the field of IDD research into areas of translational research.

This Notice is intended to provide key details of the intended NOFO in order to allow potential applicants to develop responsive proposals. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Each IDDRC application for the final round of competition is expected to include the following components referenced in NOT-HD-24-023:

  • Administrative Core
  • Clinical Translational Core
  • 1-2 Additional Core(s) for a total of 3-4 Cores
  • 2-3 Specific Research Projects designed to improve the translation of existing knowledge or strategies for the prevention, treatment, and/or amelioration of IDD
  • Outside research projects funded by federal, state, and private sources
  • Plans for outreach, engagement and dissemination to the community
  • Plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspectives (PEDP)

In addition to the components listed above, this NOFO will have the following elements:

  • This funding opportunity will be limited to only currently funded IDDRCs under RFA-HD-20-016 or RFA-HD-21-009.
  • The duration of each proposed IDDRC is 2 years maximum.
  • Each IDDRC will be required to have 2-3 Specific Research Projects, and 1 of these Projects is allowed to be a completion, continuation, and/or extension of a currently supported Project. The Projects do not need to be interrelated to be responsive.

The estimated date of publication of the Notice of Funding Opportunity is Fall 2024, with awards anticipated in FY2026. See Frequently Asked Questions at https://www.nichd.nih.gov/research/supported/eksiddrc/eksiddrc_FAQs_24 for additional information.
