Key Dates
National Institute on Aging (NIA)
This Notice informs the research community that the National Institute on Aging (NIA) intends to reissue Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) RFA-AG-20-021, Nathan Shock Centers Coordinating Center (U24 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)." The NOFO will solicit applications for the development and maintenance of a Nathan Shock Centers Coordinating Centers (NSC3).
In addition to reissuing RFA-AG-20-021, NIA intends to reissue its companion NOFO, RFA-AG-20-020, Nathan Shock Centers of Excellence in Basic Biology of Aging (P30). Therefore, potential applicants may also be interested in reviewing NOT-AG-23-062, Notice of Intent to Publish the Reissuance of RFA-AG-20-020, "Nathan Shock Centers of Excellence in Basic Biology of Aging (P30 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)."
This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.
The NOFO is expected to be published in winter 2024 with an expected application due date in summer 2024. Note that these time frames are simply estimations, and they may change.
The NOFO will utilize the U24 Resource-Related Research Projects – Cooperative Agreements activity code.
Additional details about the planned NOFO are provided below.
Background
The Nathan Shock Centers for Excellence in Aging Biology (NSC) conducts leadership, training, and research activities that aim to increase the dissemination of scientific knowledge in research areas supported by NIA's Division of Aging Biology (DAB). The NSC facilitates sustained progress on basic aging research, either overall or on a key area within the field. This is achieved primarily through intellectual leadership and innovation, support of innovative cores, and funding of pilot studies for investigators willing to expand their research into aging biology. The activities of the NSC are best served if funded applications coordinate activities. Therefore, the NSC3 was established in 2017 to facilitate coordination.
The purpose of the NSC3 is to facilitate support for new and established investigators in biology of aging research, and to support education, outreach, and diversity in the research workforce (see NOT-OD-20-031, Notice of NIH's Interest in Diversity). This is accomplished by facilitating interactions among the NSC, NIA, researchers in the biology of aging, and other research communities and centers programs.
The Initiative
The NOFO will invite applications to develop and maintain a NSC3. Major activities of the proposed NSC3 will include the following:
This is an open competition. Applicants should be familiar with NSC activities, but do not need to be part of an active NSC.
