Notice of Limited Competition Request For Applications: Integrative Neuroscience Initiative on Alcoholism (INIA) Consortias

Notice Number: NOT-AA-06-101

Key Dates
Release Date: December 2, 2005

Issued by
National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), (http://www.niaaa.nih.gov)

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) seeks to continue support of two previously funded consortia under the Integrative Neuroscience Initiative on Alcoholism (INIA) initiative. Continuing support is sought for highly integrated, multidisciplinary, collaborative research projects that focus on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying neuroadaptation to alcohol leading to excessive alcohol intake and on mechanisms underlying stress, anxiety, and excessive alcohol intake. This multidisciplinary focus should integrate neurobiological, behavioral and molecular genetic approaches to the study of mechanisms of excessive alcohol intake through the use of established core resource facilities and integrated research component projects in each consortium.

NIAAA established the INIA initiative and funded the two existing consortia as a result of two Request for Applications (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-AA-01-002.html and http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-AA-02-009.html) to facilitate cooperative and coordinated interactions within the alcohol research community. Each highly integrated, multidisciplinary research consortium works interactively to study excessive alcohol consumption, from the molecular through the cellular and neural network levels to well characterized and validated behavioral models. Through this notice of limited competition we seek competing continuation applications from investigators in the two current consortia. We also seek new applications derived from pilot or developmental projects previously funded under the consortia as well as projects from new investigators not currently part of the consortia but are interacting with them in some capacity. We seek to substantially add to the direction and goals of the consortia through these new projects. It is recommended that any new research project submitted under either consortia should include a letter of collaboration from their consortium coordinator as part of their application.

Mechanism of Support

Applications submitted in response to this Notice of Limited Competition should be submitted under the cooperative agreement award (U01) mechanism . The total project period for an application submitted in response to this notice may not exceed 5 years.

Submitting an Application

Applications must be prepared using the research grant applications found in the PHS 398 instructions for preparing a research grant application. The PHS 398 is available at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/phs398.html in an interactive format.
