Recognizing 25 Years of Improving Animal Welfare, Advancing Science

“Animal Welfare and Scientific Research: 1985 to 2010”

Symposium Proceedings: ILAR Journal, 2011 Vol. 52(S) (PDF - 16 MB)

The symposium was held on October 25-26, 2010 in Bethesda, Maryland to:

  • Acknowledge the achievements of 25 years of biomedical research conducted under the U.S. Government Principles, the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Animal Welfare Act and Regulations; and
  • Commemorate the 1984 NIH symposium, Animal Welfare and Scientific Research.

    1984 NIH Symposium
In April 1984, NIH held a symposium entitled “Animal Welfare and Scientific Research.”

Symposium speakers at opening session: (l to r) Dr. Donald F. Frederickson, former NIH Director who served as keynoter; Dr. James B. Wyngaarden, current NIH Director; Dr. Edward N. Brandt Jr., Assistant Secretary for Health; and Dr. Charles McCarthy, Director of the Office for Protection from Research Risks, who served as symposium chairman. [NIH Record, April 24, 1984]

Brandt Jr., Assistant Secretary for Health; and Dr. Charles McCarthy, Director of the Office for Protection from Research Risks, who served as symposium chairman. [NIH Record, April 24, 1984]

Symposium Program

  • Day one consisted of sessions focusing on the advances in animal housing facilities, IACUCs, education and training, and veterinary care.
  • Day two featured biomedical researchers and policy experts discussing the contributions of animal models to human and animal health.
