USE OF GENOTYPING FACILITIES FOR NIAMS GRANT APPLICANTS Release Date: August 12, 1999 National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) recognizes the potential usefulness that genotyping plays in many research protocols and encourages this approach where appropriate. The NIAMS wishes, however, to emphasize to the research community that resources and facilities for high throughput genotyping are currently available nationally and that it may be more efficient (both fiscally and procedurally) to utilize these than to propose establishing such a facility at each research institution. The NIAMS will therefore take into account when making funding decisions whether the use of a national rather than local facility has been requested, and view the use of national facilities favorably. One example of such a national resource is the Center for Inherited Disease Research (CIDR). CIDR has been established as a resource to provide, on a fee-for-service basis, high throughput genotyping services to research efforts that are attempting to identify genetic loci and allelic variants involved in multifactorial human disease. Information about this facility can be located at: https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/not97-176.html Another national facility is the NHLBI Mammalian Genotyping Service (MGS) located at the Marshfield Medical Research Foundation. This facility provides high throughput genotyping services to support genetic studies aimed at identifying genes in all disease areas and provides gene mapping for human, mouse and rat studies. Further information about this facility can found at: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/nhlbi/sciinf/genotype.txt INQUIRIES Inquiries are encouraged and should be directed to one of the Institute program directors, according to scientific area: A list of program staff can be located at: http://www.nih.gov/niams/grants/eplist.htm
