National Eye Institute, http://www.nei.nih.gov PURPOSE The National Eye Institute (NEI) announces the availability of its most recent long-range planning document, Vision Research--A National Plan: 1999- 2003 as well as a separate Executive Summary of the Plan. For more than 20 years, the NEI and the National Advisory Eye Council (NAEC), through its Vision Research Program Planning Subcommittee, have attempted to conscientiously meet their stewardship responsibilities through a comprehensive planning process. This process has resulted in the development and publication of a series of long-range plans that address the most pressing visual health needs and research opportunities of the Nation. These plans have been developed in partnership with the full NAEC; NEI staff; numerous members of the scientific research community; and supporters in many scientific, voluntary, and philanthropic organizations throughout the country. The present plan is sixth in the series that dates back to 1975. AVAILABILITY Both documents are available on NEI's world wide web homepage (http://www.nei.nih.gov) in PDF, HTML, and text-only formats.
