NIH REGIONAL SEMINAR IN PROGRAM FUNDING AND GRANTS ADMINISTRATION

A regional seminar covering topics related to the National Institutes of Health
extramural program funding and grants administration has been scheduled for
Thursday and Friday, April 22-23, 1999, in Gainesville, Florida. The seminar,
hosted by the University of Florida, is designed to attract participants from the
southern/southeastern region, although interested individuals from other regions
are welcome to attend. Individuals from small and minority educational
institutions, for-profit research organizations, hospitals, universities and
medical centers are encouraged to attend. The two-day seminar will feature both
plenary and break-out sessions in order to provide information of interest to
academic researchers, scientists, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers,
and both new and senior research administrators.
Plenary session topics include: Scientific Peer Review; Development of Institute
Program Priorities and Funding Plans; an Open Panel Session with University
Participants; and Electronic Research Administration, which will additionally
include on-going sessions both days at the Brain Institute on the campus of the
University of Florida.
Break-out sessions will be held on the following topics: Human Subjects/Animal
Welfare; Compliance Issues; NIH Fundamentals; Modular Grants; Conflict of
Interest; Funding Opportunities for New Investigators; Intellectual Property;
Clinical Trials; Project Monitoring; Current Issues in Research Administration;
NRSA; Research Administration for Faculty; a Mock Study Section Review; and an
Open Session for Researchers.

A block of rooms has been reserved for seminar participants at a rate of $69 per
night, single or double occupancy. Participants should reference the NIH Regional
Seminar when you call. Reservations must be made by April 2, 1999 in order to
receive the negotiated conference room rate.
Registration Fee: $145
The registration fee will cover breakfast and lunch on Thursday and Friday, a
reception on Thursday evening, and all seminar materials. Checks or purchase
orders made out to the University of Florida Research Foundation will be accepted
for payment.

FUTURE SEMINARS
Another NIH Regional Meeting Seminar is planned on July 15-16 of this year. The
location of the seminar will be the University of Wisconsin Medical School in
Madison, Wisconsin. No separate mailing list is maintained for the regional
seminars. Information on this upcoming regional seminar will be published in the
NIH Guide on the NIH home page (grants.nih.gov/grants/policy/policy.htm), as it
becomes available.
