EDUCATING FOR THE RESPONSIBLE CONDUCT OF RESEARCH Release Date: March 18, 1999 P.T. Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research Applied Research Ethics National Association Association of American Medical Colleges National Institutes of Health Tufts University School of Medicine All institutions receiving NIH training funds are required to offer programs educating trainees about the responsible conduct of research (RCR), and NRSA- supported trainees are now required to attend these programs (trainees receiving other support are expected to attend). Since this requirement was implemented, many institutions have been seeking out resources and ideas for assembling effective programs and for addressing the vast array of topics that might be included. To respond to this need, Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R), the AAMC, and the NIH have co-sponsored over the years a series of conferences to assist with the oversight, design, and teaching of these courses. On May 13 and 14, 1999, at the Bethesda (Pooks Hill) Marriott in Bethesda, Maryland, PRIM&R in cooperation with the AAMC, the Office of Extramural Research/NIH, and Tufts University School of Medicine, and with generous support from the Office of Research Integrity, will host a conference entitled, "Educating For the Responsible Conduct of Research in the Next Millennium: New Dilemmas, Continuing Questions, and Effective Strategies." Panel discussions will include the following topics: developing an educational approach to address emerging controversies, developing the most appropriate course goals, format, content, and evaluation tools for your institution; perspectives and reflections of students and trainees on becoming scientists, grappling with perpetual problems and finding responsible solutions. To assist institutions in complying with the NIH mandate, this conference will offer a short program in the essential topics of RCR for postdoctoral trainees. Enrollment of trainees is limited and some scholarship funds are available. Early registration is suggested.
