This announcement is a collaborative effort between the Environmental Protection
Agency, Department of the Interior, Department of Health and Human Services
(National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences), and Department of Commerce
(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), and is endorsed by the
Department of Agriculture, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, Food and Drug Administration, and the Office
of Science and Technology Policy. The purpose of this announcement is to develop
a government-wide coordinated effort to stimulate innovative, multi-disciplinary
research to address high priority scientific uncertainties related to the
potential adverse effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC) in humans and
wildlife.
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences supports research
directed at characterizing human health impacts from exposure to environmental
agents. Mechanistic research on chemicals which mimic or block the actions of
natural hormones such as estrogens or androgens and epidemiologic studies of the
health effects of EDCs in women, men, and children are high priorities. This
research will provide a clearer picture of the exposure required for adverse
health effects.
